Plot

To fulfill their grandma’s dying wish, Dakota sets out to find her missing sister, who vanished during a war along with her music. Their search takes a turn upon meeting Tabitha, whose family sings their great aunt’s songs at her temple.

Characters

Dakota F. Chéry or “Kota” is a lonely musician in the Midwest. Their parents prevent them from visiting their motherland. But when Grandma Jessica’s dementia becomes severe, Kota sets out to help accomplish her dreams.

Tabitha Galili or “Tab” is a poet and oud player in the Mideast. She lives to meet new people every day and dreams of starting a band.

Jessica is Kota’s grandma who was once a musician before she sold her guitar to survive poverty after the East War. She must reconnect with her sister Lorenza before dementia completely takes her. Grandma Jessica is her 84-year-old self.

Lorenza is Jessica’s songwriting sister who vanished during the East War at age 20. She has unknown nomadic ties to Tab. If she was alive today, she would be 80.

Gveret Galili is Tab’s mother. They run The Temple in The Middle.

Mar Galili is Tab’s father. They run The Temple in The Middle.

History

Tempo inspired by David Quang Pham’s grandma and great aunt, who sold their guitar and music dreams to survive poverty after the Vietnam War. Grandma stayed in Saigon while Great Aunt gone nomad.

David Quang Pham is an award-winning Vietnamese-American songwriter and filmmaker based in Manhattan, known for creating musicals that personify scientific concepts to explore the human condition. His work has been produced or developed by Queer Theatre Kalamazoo, Milky Way Theatre (Off-Broadway), Musical Theatre Factory, Signature Theatre, with performances in Colorado, Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Portugal. His artistic talents led to his Working Title Playwrights apprenticeship, Playwrights Foundation fellowship, Great Performances Fellowship Award, and 78th Tony Awards CBS appearance. They hold a B.S. in Astrophysics with honors and Minor in Theatre from Michigan State University.
